Redlander Devlog 1: Hark, a playable alpha!

Hello and welcome to the inaugural Redlander Devlog!

For anyone who hasn't been following development on my Twitter or Patreon, Redlander is an episodic puzzle platformer set in a world recovering from climate apocalypse, featuring retro 1-bit graphics, and multiple playable characters.

After many, many months of poking around under the hood of the Bitsy engine, to expand it with custom systems, I cannot tell you how excited I am to publicly share the first playable alpha!

This demo focuses on the first of the characters, Maxine. She's a clever little gremlin, who uses a variety of tools to navigate the ruins of Subterra, and the Wastelands above. She does repair work in her underground home, studies ancient machines with the Technician's Guild, and is maybe a bit too eager-to-please for her own good... but she's doing her best!

Her most basic tool is her trusty wrench. She can use it to cross gaps, pull herself onto ledges, vault on top of it, and even use it to pogo-hop upward! However, it's a bit bulky, and can get in the way if you're not careful where you aim it.

Her small size makes some places hard to reach, and can make moving heavy objects difficult. But even without her tools, she can still jump, climb, fit into small spaces, and is otherwise nimble enough to get around pretty well.

Try the demo, and let me know how you like it! I'd like to share gameplay demos featuring some of the other characters in the coming months, as I continue to work on the first proper episode. Keep an eye out, and be sure to follow me here for future updates.

Also, thanks to donations by my wonderful patrons, I'll be releasing this project for free on itch as each episode is finished, for anyone to play on the web!

Since Redlander's development is entirely donation funded, I can only afford to spend so much time on it per week. If you'd like to help me spend more nights working on this game, please share it with friends, or become a patron yourself. We're super close to the first supporter goal, and I'd love to see us pass that milestone. Especially since it'd allow me to spend at least one night per week working on this!

Take care all, and I'll see you in the next update.
